Dear Garden City School Community,

As we close out the week, I would like to share a few highlights from our schools, along with important updates for our school community.

Propel NY Energy Transmission Project

Yesterday, Garden City joined school officials from five other districts at a press conference to share our concerns about the Propel NY Energy Transmission Project and its potential impact on our school community.

The proposed route would run directly across the street from Stewart Elementary School and through other areas of our community, as shown in the attached map. It is important that our community understand both the project’s potential long-term impacts and the effects construction could have on Stewart School, including impacts related to electromagnetic field levels, dust, diesel emissions, noise, traffic, and emergency access. We are seeking an independent assessment and clear, enforceable protections for students and staff.

We have filed a letter of opposition and, with the other districts, are asking the New York State Public Service Commission to suspend its approval until these questions are answered. We have requested a meeting with project representatives in early November.

Transportation

We received concerns about students not having seats on our high school buses. In response, the high school principal and assistant principals checked each bus before departure today and ensured that all students were seated. We continue to address transportation challenges caused by driver shortages.

Garden City Athletics

Congratulations to our Varsity Girls’ Soccer team on winning the Nassau County Championship today!

Congratulations to our Varsity Boys’ Golf team on winning the Conference Championship, and to our Varsity Girls’ Swimming and Diving team on its third-place finish at the Divisional Championships. Several swimmers and divers qualified for the Nassau County and New York State Championships.

Girls’ Volleyball advances to the quarterfinals and are competing this evening, while Field Hockey and Boys’ Soccer will compete for county championships. Our Boys’ and Girls’ Cross Country teams will also compete in the county championships this weekend.

Congratulations to all our student-athletes and coaches. Please see the full schedule and come out to support our Trojans!

With Halloween tomorrow, today was a fun day for our students. Our parades were filled with creative costumes and so many smiles. Our staff joined in the fun with costumes of their own. It was a joy to see everyone celebrating together.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support. Have a wonderful weekend!

Sincerely,

Kusum
